Help manage student improvement

If a struggling student is not part of a school-wide progress monitoring system or a federally required plan, your school might be required to create an individual progress monitoring plan for them.

SnapShot provides teachers with a simple and effective tool to create individual student progress monitoring plans for reading, math, writing and science. The PMP builder automatically enters student demographic information, up to 5 years of FCAT and Stanford data into its system, saving work for teachers. The PMP feature enables users to build a plan in less than 10 minutes and takes minimal time to update! Login and give it a try.

  1. Click the Queries menu button
  2. Select Roster Year
  3. Under Add Criteria, select Tests – the test type (eg. FCAT SSS Reading) – Ach Level
  4. Enter in the minimum score of 1 and maximum score of 2
  5. Click Get Results button
  6. Click on the Last Name of the Student you want to create a PMP
  7. Click on the Create link next to the desired subject area
  8. Create the student's PMP and print if desired

The SP SnapShot™ PMP builder can help to identify instructional strategies to help improve student performance in subject content subscores. This tool can also be a great complement to your district-approved progress monitoring plan with our trademark illustrative graphs.

Updating user access

It is the time of year to make sure that all of your staff has proper access to SP SnapShot™. If you have new teachers joining your school to start 2007-08, make sure that they have accounts set up. If you have had some staff leave your school, it is important to protect your school's information and disable their access.

It is important that each staff member has the correct email address listed in SP SnapShot™. This will ensure that each person with an account can easily retrieve their password if forgotten. They will also receive valuable information on new features and tips on how to use SP SnapShot™ effectively. To check that you have the correct email address listed, after logging into SP SnapShot™, click on "My Preferences" and select "Edit My Profile."

It is also important to make sure that everyone has the correct level of access: Teacher, Counselor, School Administrator, District Administrator or District View. Principals can grant their staff Teacher or Counselor access. Administrator level access lets someone add or remove users. If a principal needs to grant a user Administrator level access, they can fax a request on school letterhead to 1-250-658-5936 (Attention: Karen). If you need a current list of users with Administrator level access in your school, please email karen@studentperformance.com.

Another Success Story

Port St. Joe Middle School is a very unique school in Gulf County. They have very little staff turnover and can easily transfer what they have learned from one year to the next. They are able to build on each year and expand their knowledge. We had a pleasure to talk to one of their teachers to look at what they do and how SP SnapShot™ helps out.

"When you can see the percentages, for instance, of your lowest performing students in reading, writing, and math, as a conscionable teacher and a descent human being, you can not ignore the outcry for help," said Judy Williams, a teacher at Port St. Joe Middle School. "As a faculty, we started early on, meeting with community groups, with parents, with students, with teachers, to address our greatest concerns. We started owning the problems and personalizing the needs. What you can see in black and white, with real names, real data, real results, you just can't ignore it and you can't play the blame game. SnapShot allowed us to SEE!"

"So we start our year looking at what we did and what we need to do," said Williams. "Much of our planning and programming come from examining our SnapShot data. Each teacher formulates his/her yearly goals around the critical areas of need pointed out by SnapShot. We take our class rolls and examine the data for each individual student. We determine what students are on the bubble and can more easily be moved from one level to the next. We plan strategies to focus on those students, and begin early dialogue with parents and students to discuss these strategies and our expectations. Each teacher looks at individual student performance within the subgroups of each area tested, and makes decisions about what skills are pretty firmly entrenched and those that are in much need of remediation. Teachers decide which areas need individual attention and which need instruction for the classroom as a whole."

"Many teachers actually create individual plans that contain test data - levels, DSS, sub scores - and have students write out their personal goals based on this data," continued Williams. "The students, teachers, and sometimes, the parents, sign this plan. The plans come to have real significance for the students when they see that all of their hard work results in goals being met. They begin to understand and relate the importance of looking at where they are, where they want to be, and where they end up, when making conscientious decisions about their data. This important step is something that I think the students take with them as they enter their high school years, and hopefully, we are seeing the results of that in their high school scores."

"We start the year with SnapShot, but we end with it too," said Williams. "I think administrators and teachers are as bad, if not worse, than parents and students are about results. We want to see how "our kids" did! We don't want to even think about the new students coming to us until our pouring over SnapShot data has satiated our appetite for data and comparison of data. Did the hard work pay off? Did the strategies work? Did we address the most pressing needs of those who needed our help the most? If it weren't for SnapShot, I can't even imagine how we would begin to figure any of this "stuff" out in time to help our students and our school performance. So has SnapShot helped our teachers and our school and has it made an impact on our staff and school? I think the answer is pretty obvious….Yes, yes, yes."

Every month we would like to recognize a school in the SnapShot bulletin. Have your story featured and we will give your staff three free Teacher Essentials lesson modules. Contact us at 1-866-479-7627 to share your story.
