SP SnapShot Bulletins

Welcome to the latest SnapSpooktacular!

Welcome to the latest SnapSpooktacular. That’s right, we’re three months into the school year with Halloween days away. We’ll be giving you incredible tips and hints on how SnapShot can help you with costume ideas. We’ll also be telling you about two great new SnapShot features that we’re proud to release; Custom Query by Teacher and Course Checkbox Selection. This month holds an FTE week, one of two counts kids must be in for them to count on the school grade; basically, if they aren’t in their school for this count, they won’t be in the school grade. We’ll show you how to export and save your low 25% Reading and low 25% Math students.

Coming soon

Custom Query by Teacher

Soon you can select by teacher(s) that teach a course during that roster year after you’ve selected a roster year on the front page of Custom Queries. You can select a teacher by clicking in the checkbox next to that teacher's/teachers' name. A "check all" and a "clear all" button are also offered. After the teachers are selected, you can make other Custom Query selections, or hit "Get Results".

Course Checkbox Selection

SnapShot currently shows either one class or all, but we’d like to provide you with the capability of displaying two or more courses in the assessment views and graphs. On the Course Listing page, checkboxes are added next to the Course Listings so that SnapShot will display all students in the selected courses.

SnapShot Halloween Inspiration

Life-size Learning Gains Bar Graph costume
Looking for that last minute Halloween costume? Got 10 friends who are also looking for a great Halloween costume? SnapShot has the best idea for you. Select one of your classes and print out the Reading (or Math) Learning Gains Bar Graph. Using it as a guide, have 6 of your friends dress in green and 4 dressed in red (to represent learning gains made and learning gains not made)—painting their faces and writing the number of students on their foreheads. Make t-shirts that say what bar they’re representing (i.e. Maintained Levels 3, 4, or 5, Made Adequate Progress Level 2, etc.). If possible, have a mix of heights within your friends so your tall friends can reflect the higher numbers/percentages. Once everyone is color coordinated, have them line up in the right order. See if your other teachers can guess which class they’re representing. What a great idea!!

Spooky Scatterplot costume
Don’t have any friends but still need a costume? Choose one of your classes and get their Math vs. Reading Scatterplot graph for this year and last year. Then buy a large white sheet and fold it in half. With a black marker draw graph lines on one side and then the other. Using this year’s scatterplot graph, draw each dot representing each of your graphed students. On the other half of the sheet draw a dot to represent each of last year’s graphed students. Be sure to match the colors if the student is ESE, LEP, etc. Finally, cut a hole large enough to fit your head through in the center of the fold. Now put the sheet on like a poncho. Ta Dah! You have transformed yourself into a beautiful Scatterplot for two consecutive years! Not only are you a colorful graph but you’ll also be a great conversation starter as you explain all your successes from the last year. Truly brilliant!

Identifying Your Lowest 25%

Please consider all efforts to identify the lowest 25% as an approximation. The lowest 25% is comprised of matched pairs selected through a statistical ranking process that is not predictable at the beginning of the school years. (NOTE: In addition, any new students tested in Florida last year will be counted along with all students who qualify who were in attendance at the school for Survey II and Survey III. Because of this, select as many as 30% of your students to focus upon and review your selection after Survey II is completed in October. If you selected more than you needed to, all you’ve done is given learning attention to additional students.)

The lowest 25% for the current year is computed on students who were tested at the same grade levels in the previous year. Thus, at the elementary level it encompasses three groups – students tested as third graders, students tested as fourth graders, and retained fifth graders. Some students in each of the first two groups will be retained at one grade level and others will be promoted to the next grade level.

Similarly, middle school lowest 25% will encompass four groups – students tested as fifth graders, students tested as sixth graders, students tested as seventh graders, and retained eighth graders. High schools will encompass three groups – students tested as eighth graders, students tested as ninth graders, and retained tenth graders.
